June 2008 MIAM
Monthly Report – Pictures and Illustrations

The map below shows which
"grids" the pediatric malaria cases have come from, of those admitted
to Macha Hospital so far in 2008. It is apparent that very few cases were
admitted from the eastern side of Macha, even though the population density is
similar. Further work is required to understand the reasons for this
distribution, since in previous years cases were more evenly distributed in a
radius around the hospital.

1)
The in–patient pediatric admissions
so far in 2008 have shown a very low number of cases of malaria. The graph
below shows the number of malaria cases admitted per month over the last 9
years. This shows the dramatic reduction since 2003, which has been sustained,
despite some variation in some years. While these changes seem to correlate
with the introduction of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT), and subsequent
"stock-outs", it is still too early to say whether this is a
"cause and effect" phenomenon, or not.
